Volcanoes and Forests of Mount Pelée and the Pitons of Northern Martinique

Mount Pelée gave the world its most terrible volcanic lesson: its 1902 eruption, the deadliest of the 20th century, obliterated the town of Saint-Pierre and became a founding case study for the science of volcanology. The serial site spans the volcanoes and rainforests of northern Martinique from shoreline to summit, harbouring the whole range of Lesser Antilles forest types and strict endemics such as the Martinique volcano frog and the Martinique oriole. UNESCO inscribed it as a natural World Heritage Site in 2023.
