The Gobi is a vast cold desert and steppe region spanning southern Mongolia and northern China, characterised by rocky hamada plains, sand dunes, and semi-arid grassland rather than the unbroken sand seas of popular imagination. The Mongolian Gobi encompasses significant palaeontological sites where dinosaur eggs and new species have been excavated since Roy Chapman Andrews's expeditions in the 1920s. The dune field of Khongoryn Els, the saxaul forests, and the flamingo lakes of the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park are among its most visited features.
