Jeti-Ögüz, meaning 'seven bulls' in Kyrgyz, is a valley of red sandstone cliffs whose eroded formations include a row of rounded scarlet bluffs said to resemble recumbent bulls. The valley lies about 25 kilometres south of Karakol and serves as the gateway to a high alpine circuit popular with trekkers. A Soviet-era sanatorium survives in the lower valley, and the flower meadows above are among the most photographed landscapes of the Issyk-Kul region.
