Burabay, sometimes called the 'Switzerland of Kazakhstan', is a national park in the north-central steppe preserving a cluster of granitic inselbergs rising above a landscape of pine forest and clear lakes. The largest water body, Lake Burabay, is framed by distinctive rock formations including the formation known as Sphinxes and the isolated pillar called Abylaykhan Rock. The park serves as a major resort area for residents of Astana, situated roughly 250 kilometres to the south.
