The Kyzylkum, whose name translates as 'red sand' in Turkic, is one of the largest deserts in Central Asia, covering parts of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. Its Uzbek portion consists of rolling red and ochre dune fields interspersed with flat clay pans and scattered saxaul scrub. The desert is sparsely inhabited by semi-nomadic communities and provides a dramatic landscape backdrop for camel treks departing from camps near Nurata or Aydarkul.
