Patagonia National Park was established in 2018 following the private conservation work of Tompkins Conservation, which donated over 400,000 hectares of former estancia land to the Chilean state. The park includes the Cochrane-Tamango sector with its river canyons and puma territory, the Valle Chacabuco with its guanaco herds, and the Lago Cochrane system bordering Argentina. The restoration of native grassland through the removal of sheep is visibly advanced in parts of the valley, and the park road traces the Carretera Austral for much of its length.
