El Tatio is the largest geyser field in the southern hemisphere and the third largest in the world, situated on the Andean altiplano at 4,320 metres elevation north of San Pedro de Atacama. The approximately 80 active geysers and hundreds of fumaroles are most dramatic at dawn, when the cold morning air at altitude amplifies the steam columns rising from the vents. The turquoise geothermal pools that dot the field provide warm bathing opportunities despite the sub-zero pre-dawn temperatures at that elevation.
