Valle de la Luna is a section of the Los Flamencos National Reserve near San Pedro de Atacama, characterised by eroded salt and clay formations that produce a landscape of ridges, caves, and amphitheatres in tones of grey, ochre, and white. The valley receives its name from the lunar quality of its barren surface, which supports almost no vegetation. Sunset from the Duna Mayor sand dune, when the low angle light turns the salt formations pink and violet, is among the most popular photography moments in the Atacama region.
