Easter Island, known in Rapa Nui as Te Pito o te Henua, is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific 3,700 kilometres from the Chilean coast, famous for the 900-plus moai stone figures carved by the Rapa Nui people between roughly the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Rano Raraku volcanic quarry, where approximately 400 partially carved and abandoned moai remain embedded in the hillside, offers the most concentrated and archaeologically significant grouping. The Ahu Tongariki platform, with 15 restored moai facing inland, is the largest ceremonial ahu on the island and the primary sunrise photography position.
