Cabo Polonio is a remote coastal settlement within a protected national park on the Rocha department coast, accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicle across a belt of coastal dunes or on foot. The cape is home to one of the largest South American sea lion colonies on the Atlantic coast, numbering several thousand individuals, whose roaring and movement across the rocky headland immediately below the lighthouse provides an immersive wildlife spectacle. There is no grid electricity or running water at Cabo Polonio, and overnight accommodation is in simple rented cabins.
