Chilean Patagonia encompasses the southern reaches of the Andes and their fjord coastline, stretching from Aysén to Tierra del Fuego and encompassing some of the most sparsely inhabited terrain on the continent. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field — the world's second largest contiguous ice mass outside the poles — drains through outlet glaciers including the Grey Glacier in Torres del Paine and the Perito Moreno across the border. The consistent westerly winds that define the regional climate have shaped the bent and tortured forms of the lenga beech forests.
