Levuka Historical Port Town

A low line of timber warehouses and stores stretches along the beach at Levuka, shaded by coconut and mango trees — the improbable first colonial capital of Fiji, ceded to Britain in 1874. American and European traders raised the town from the early 19th century around existing Fijian villages, but the indigenous population kept the upper hand in numbers, and their building traditions shaped the port that grew here. UNESCO inscribed Levuka as a World Heritage Site in 2013.
