Conguillio National Park in the La Araucanía region surrounds the active Llaima volcano and protects one of the largest remaining stands of ancient araucaria trees on the continent, some estimated to be over 1,000 years old. The Sierra Nevada trail and the viewpoints above Laguna Conguillio offer framing of the conical volcano through groves of araucarias whose umbrella-shaped canopies are a distinctive element of the Andean skyline. Snowfall transforms the park in winter into a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing destination.
