Villarrica is one of the most active volcanoes in South America, a near-perfect snow-capped cone rising 2,847 metres above the eponymous lake and the tourist town of Pucón on its northern shore. The summit crater contains a persistent lava lake, and guided climbs — requiring crampons and ice axe — are one of the most popular adventure activities in the Chilean Lake District. The surrounding national park contains araucaria monkey-puzzle forests on the eastern flanks.
