Lauca National Park occupies an altiplano plateau in the Arica and Parinacota region at elevations between 3,200 and 6,342 metres, centred on Lago Chungará, one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake sits at the base of the Pomerape and Parinacota volcanoes, whose snow-capped symmetrical cones are reflected in the lake's still surface on calm mornings. Vicuñas, viscachas, and three flamingo species — Chilean, Andean, and puna — are resident in the bofedal wetlands.
