The Carretera Austral is a 1,240-kilometre highway threading through the fjords, forests, and volcanoes of northern and central Patagonia between Puerto Montt and Villa O'Higgins, much of it unpaved. The route passes the marble caves of Puerto Río Tranquilo on Lago General Carrera, the hanging glaciers of Parque Queulat, and the turquoise river mouths of the Futaleufú valley. Driving or cycling the highway is a primary way to access landscapes that have no other road connection.
