On the steep escarpments of the Main Ethiopian Rift, the Gedeo people farm the land in stacked layers: tall trees shading the staple enset, with coffee and other shrubs growing beneath. Their traditional knowledge sustains this dense agroforest, while sacred groves reserved for ritual and clusters of ancient megalithic monuments along the ridges are tended by community elders. UNESCO inscribed the Gedeo Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site in 2023.
