An island in Lake Titicaca some 35 kilometers from Puno, Taquile maintains a community-based tourism model in which families rotate hosting duties and income distribution is managed collectively. The island's men practice a textile tradition of knitting complex chullo caps recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The hillsides are terraced with Inca-era agricultural platforms producing quinoa and potatoes above the high-altitude lake.
