A city on the western shore of Lake Titicaca at 3,827 meters, Puno is the principal departure point for excursions to the Uros floating islands, Taquile, and Amantaní. The city is considered the capital of Peruvian folkloric culture and hosts the Candelaria festival in February, one of the largest carnival celebrations in South America, featuring elaborate costumed dance troupes. The hilltop park above the city provides a panorama over the lake.
