An Inca site at approximately 3,000 meters in the Apurímac River canyon, Choquequirao is often described as Machu Picchu's less-visited equivalent. Reached only by a demanding two- to four-day trekking route with significant elevation gain, the site features ceremonial plazas, terracing, and llama-figure reliefs integrated into hillside walls. The surrounding canyon landscape of cloud forest and snow-capped ridges is largely undeveloped.
