Behind a nine-hundred-metre wall at Gondar rise the castles and palaces of Fasil Ghebbi, the fortress-city where the emperor Fasilides and his heirs held court in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its palaces, churches and monasteries blend Hindu and Arab influences with a Baroque manner introduced by Jesuit missionaries, producing an architecture found nowhere else. UNESCO inscribed the Gondar royal enclosure as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
