The largest pre-Columbian archaeological site in Ecuador, Ingapirca sits at 3,160 meters on the páramo and incorporates both Cañari and Inca construction phases. The elliptical Temple of the Sun is constructed in Inca fitted-stone masonry aligned with solar events. The site occupies a prominent hilltop ridge with views across a wide Andean valley that would have served strategic surveillance and ceremonial purposes.
