Ecuador's Oriente region encompasses a southern section of the Amazon basin with some of the highest recorded biodiversity per unit area in the world, concentrated within Yasuní National Park and the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. Lowland jungle lodges offer access to black-water lagoons, flooded igapó forests, and canopy towers for birdwatching. Indigenous Kichwa, Shuar, Achuar, and Waorani communities maintain traditional territories within and adjacent to protected areas.
