A volcanic crater lake within the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve, Cuicocha sits at 3,246 meters and contains two small dome islands that give it its Quechua name meaning 'guinea pig lake.' The rim trail of approximately 16 kilometers encircles the entire caldera, offering views across the deep blue water to Cotacachi volcano and the distant snowcap of Cayambe. Boat trips cross the crater to the islands.
