At 6,263 meters, Chimborazo is Ecuador's highest peak and, owing to the equatorial bulge, the point on Earth's surface farthest from the center of the planet. The surrounding wildlife reserve supports populations of vicuña reintroduced in the 1980s, which can often be observed grazing against the glaciated summit backdrop. Two refuges on the mountain's flanks serve as high-altitude acclimatization bases.
