A dry tropical forest and eroded badlands of roughly 330 square kilometers in the upper Magdalena Valley, Tatacoa is divided into two color zones — the ochre Cuzco sector and the grey La Tatacoa sector — separated by dry cactus scrubland. The low atmospheric humidity and distance from city lights make it one of Colombia's primary sites for stargazing. Fossil beds in the area have yielded significant Miocene mammal remains.
