Near the shores of Lake Turkana in southern Ethiopia, the Omo's lower reaches have given up fossils that sit at the foundation of the study of human origins. Discoveries here — among them remains attributed to early Homo — proved crucial to tracing the deep chronology of our lineage, making this remote valley a name known to palaeontologists worldwide. UNESCO inscribed the Lower Valley of the Omo as a World Heritage Site in 1980.
