The Bay of Pigs (Bahía de Cochinos) on Cuba's southwestern coast is known historically as the site of the failed 1961 CIA-sponsored invasion attempt, but is also celebrated as one of the Caribbean's finest shore-diving and snorkelling destinations. The shoreline road along the Zapata Peninsula is flanked by a wall drop beginning just metres from shore, creating easily accessible deep-water diving. The surrounding Ciénaga de Zapata is the largest wetland in the Caribbean, sheltering endemic species including the bee hummingbird, the world's smallest bird.
