Ometepe Island

Ometepe is a freshwater island in Lake Nicaragua formed by two conjoined volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, rising from Central America's largest lake. Concepción is the more active of the two and still emits gases from its 1,610-metre summit, while the extinct Maderas hosts a cloud forest at its peak with a small crater lake. The island preserves numerous pre-Columbian basalt petroglyphs and supports howler monkey populations in its secondary forest corridors.
