Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, separated from the Yucatán Peninsula by a narrow channel cut by ancient Maya traders. The island's main town, San Pedro, serves as the primary base for accessing the Belize Barrier Reef just a few hundred metres offshore, offering snorkelling, diving, and fly-fishing on the shallow flats of Bacalar Chico. The island retains a laid-back, golf-cart-navigated character with painted wooden buildings and Caribbean-style guesthouses.
