The Río Dulce flows for approximately 40 kilometres between Lake Izabal and the Caribbean Sea, cutting through a landscape of rainforest-draped limestone gorges and freshwater hot springs that emerge directly from the river walls. The lower gorge narrows to just 80 metres in places, with vertical walls rising 80 metres covered in dense vegetation and nesting snowy egrets. The area is a significant wintering habitat for Morelet's crocodiles and is navigated primarily by lancha motorboats.
