Acatenango is a twin-peaked stratovolcano standing 3,976 metres above sea level in central Guatemala, offering one of the most dramatic overnight trekking experiences in Central America. From the high camp above the treeline, the neighbouring Fuego volcano—one of the most continuously active in the world—is visible erupting at close range, with incandescent bombs ejected against the night sky. The multi-day ascent begins from the village of La Soledad through agricultural land, cloud forest, and bare volcanic scree.
