Chichicastenango is a Highland Maya town in the Quiché department best known for its twice-weekly market, held on Thursdays and Sundays, which is one of the largest and oldest indigenous markets in the Americas. Vendors sell hand-woven textiles, masks, ceramics, incense, and ritual objects across a vast open-air plaza. The colonial Santo Tomás church at the plaza's eastern edge blends Catholic iconography with pre-Columbian Maya ritual practices on its entrance steps.
