Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, located around 30 kilometres south of Guatemala City within a national park of the same name. The main crater, Mackenney, regularly emits lava flows and small explosive bursts that are visible from a viewing area reached by a two-hour hike through pine and oak forest. Travellers often reach the active lava fields by late afternoon, when glowing channels are most visible against the dimming sky.
