The Sarapiquí lowlands in northern Costa Rica represent a transition zone where the volcanic foothills meet the Caribbean plains, producing a patchwork of rivers, wetlands, and remnant rainforest patches of exceptional biodiversity. The Sarapiquí River is widely used for white-water rafting at Class II–III levels, while the surrounding reserves shelter poison-dart frogs, river otters, and great green macaws. La Selva Biological Station, operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies, is headquartered here.
