Poás Volcano sits at 2,708 metres in the Central Cordillera and contains one of the world's largest active crater lakes, a hyper-acidic lagoon of sulphurous turquoise water. The summit crater is readily accessible by paved road from San José, making it among the most visited geological features in Central America. Visibility into the crater is highly dependent on cloud cover, so arriving at first light greatly increases the chance of clear views.
