Tortuguero occupies a roadless stretch of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, accessible only by small aircraft or boat through a labyrinth of jungle canals. The park protects the most important green sea turtle nesting beach in the Western Hemisphere, where tens of thousands of turtles come ashore between July and October. Canal-based boat tours offer close observation of caimans, river otters, and a rich diversity of waterbirds.
