Arenal is a near-perfect conical stratovolcano rising 1,670 metres above the northern lowlands of Costa Rica. After decades of sustained activity that made it one of the most continuously active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, eruptions subsided around 2010, though fumarolic venting persists. Photographers favour the early morning hours when mist clears to reveal the symmetrical silhouette reflected in Lake Arenal below.
