A remote bay on the upper Sea of Cortez coast of Baja California, Bahía de los Ángeles is sheltered by a string of islands that create calm water conditions and a biologically extraordinary marine environment. The bay is one of the primary aggregation sites for whale sharks in the northern Sea of Cortez, with animals present from June to December. The surrounding desert landscape of cirios (boojum trees) and giant cardon cacti extends to the water's edge, creating an alien-landscape contrast with the blue of the sea.
