The capital of Baja California Sur on the Sea of Cortez, La Paz has a long malecón boulevard along its sheltered bay, calm turquoise water, and access to some of the most biologically diverse marine habitat in the world. Jacques Cousteau reportedly described the Sea of Cortez as the world's aquarium, and La Paz is the jumping-off point for swimming with whale sharks in winter, diving with sea lions at Los Islotes, and watching giant manta rays at the nearby seamounts.
