The quieter counterpart to Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja, San José del Cabo retains a colonial-era town center with an 18th-century mission church and a gallery-lined art district in the historic centro. The Estero San José, a freshwater estuary behind the beach where 200 species of birds have been recorded, is designated a protected natural area and is walkable from the main plaza. Weekly Thursday art walks through the gallery district draw visitors from the more resort-oriented Cabo.
