A pueblo mágico in Yucatán known as the Yellow City, Izamal is painted entirely in ochre yellow — including its Franciscan monastery, streets, and houses — creating a strikingly uniform visual environment. The monastery of San Antonio de Padua was built on the platform of a Maya pyramid, and two other large unexcavated Maya structures remain visible within the town. Pope John Paul II chose Izamal for his 1993 visit to Mexico, and the papal visit is commemorated in murals throughout the monastery complex.
