A colonial mining city at over 2,400 meters elevation in north-central Mexico, Zacatecas is built in a valley between hills of pink tezontle stone and preserves one of the most intact colonial historic cores in the Americas. The cathedral's elaborate façade is considered the apex of Mexican ultra-baroque Churrigueresque style. A cable car connects the city center to the Cerro de la Bufa hilltop, where a mausoleum and statue of Pancho Villa commemorate the decisive 1914 battle fought there.
