A peninsula at the northern entrance to Banderas Bay in Nayarit, Punta Mita forms the northern boundary of one of the largest bays on Mexico's Pacific coast. The point is sheltered by the Marieta Islands to the northwest, and the clear water between them is used for whale watching during the winter months when humpback whales enter the bay to breed. Several surf breaks along the headland attract experienced surfers, and the surrounding reefs hold diverse marine life.
