A remote silver mining town at the base of the Copper Canyon system, Batopilas sits at the bottom of a deep barranca on the banks of the Batopilas River at an elevation under 500 meters — a dramatic descent from the canyon rim. The subtropical microclimate at the canyon floor supports mangoes and citrus trees in sharp contrast to the high pine forests above. Colonial-era aqueducts, a ruined hacienda, and a famously isolated cathedral in the nearby village of Satevó are among the historical remnants.
