A system of six interconnected canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Chihuahua, the Barrancas del Cobre collectively covers a greater area and is deeper in several sections than the Grand Canyon of Arizona. The Chepe railway, one of the great train journeys in the Americas, traverses the canyon system through 86 tunnels and 37 bridges between Chihuahua and Los Mochis. The Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people inhabit remote canyon communities and are known for their long-distance running traditions.
