An active stratovolcano on the border between Puebla, Morelos, and Estado de México, Popocatépetl is the second highest peak in Mexico at 5,426 meters. The volcano has been in an elevated eruptive phase since the 1990s, and ash plumes and occasional lava extrusions are visible from surrounding cities. Its conical profile, frequently dusted with snow, is prominently visible from Mexico City on clear winter mornings and from the highway connecting Puebla and the capital.
