Pilgrims once streamed across the Mediterranean world to Abu Mena, the holy city that grew over the grave of Menas of Alexandria, a Christian martyr who died in AD 296. Excavations southwest of Alexandria have revealed the great basilica complex, baptistery, streets, monasteries and workshops of one of early Christianity's foremost pilgrimage centres. Abu Mena was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
