An island community in Lake Pátzcuaro, Janitzio rises steeply from the water to a hilltop monument of José María Morelos visible from the surrounding shore. The island's narrow stone staircases are lined with homes and small workshops where local women sell embroidered textiles and traditional crafts. During Día de Muertos in early November, candle-lit vigils held in the island cemetery draw visitors who arrive by rowboat across the lake in the dark.
