A Pacific coast surf town in Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is best known for the Zicatela beach break, which generates some of the largest and most powerful shore-breaking waves in the world and hosts international surf competitions. The town also includes calmer bays to the north suitable for swimming, and a fishing harbor where daily catches arrive in the early morning. Bioluminescent plankton appear in the bay during certain months, creating vivid nighttime photography opportunities.
